The Snowbowl Gondola is a ski lift…so plan on dressing extra warm and also plan on heading up up up! You’ll be heading up about 11,000 feet and the view will be well worth the chilly temperatures. There’s something truly magical about the mountain during the winter months.

You can’t beat the view and it’s a great way to get outdoors without having to do any actual skiing, snowboarding, etc. Of course you can do that too if you want but even just a ride up the mountain on the ski lift and a cozy spot by the fire afterwards is a wonderful way to spend a winter day here in Sedona and the surrounding areas.

If you can plan your visit accordingly you should try and take the ride around sunset. The only thing that could possibly enhance the natural beauty of this area during the winter is the colorful sunset that paints the sky and all the white snowy trees in shades of orange, red, and yellow. Grab your camera and prepare for some excellent photos. Since the lift moves pretty slowly you’ll have plenty of time to take in the sights and cozy up next to a loved one!

Best Places to Camp in Sedona

Sedona is one of the best places in the US to go camping. The natural red rock formations, forests, and creeks make for a picturesque experience you can’t find anywhere else. On top of the natural beauty of Sedona, there are also many different outdoor activities you can enjoy during your visit. Take a hike on the many different paths, hop in a Pink Jeep for an off road adventure, or take a walk along the creek beds for a relaxing escape. Sedona will always be a great place to go camping, and there are many locations for you to check out!

Places to Camp in Sedona:

Cave Springs | 11345 N. SR 89A

Cave Springs is the most popular place to camp in Sedona and perhaps the most popular in all of Arizona. Nestled inside the forest, Cave Springs offers stunning views, hiking, swimming, bird watching, and so much more. The campground is a short drive away from Slide Rock State Park and the city. Ponderosa Pines provide shade for every campsite on the grounds, and Oak Creek offers beautiful sounds that will narrate your entire stay.

Pine Flat Campground | 12248 N. SR 89A

Another very popular campground is Pine Flat. Campers who visit Pine Flat often choose it for the fishing opportunities. The stream offers trout fishing, swimming, wading, and all around beautiful scenery. If fishing isn’t your thing, you can enjoy the many hiking trails, wildlife viewing areas, and nature. By the end of your trip you will find that your camera is filled with photos that will impress all your friends back home.

Chavez Crossing Group Campground | Just Past Radisson on Oak Creek Cliffs Drive

Chavez Crossing Campgrounds are for those who don’t enjoy being too far away from civilization. Chavez Crossing is right in the middle of golf courses and homes. Visitors will still get the camping feeling; they also have the added security of being so close to town.

Manzanita Campground | 34°55’38.5″N 111°44’04.0″W

Fishermen will love Manzanita Campground thanks to its location. Sitting by your campfire, you can hold your rod out into a fishing hole just a few feet away. The usual Sedona area activities are nearby. You can go hiking and sightseeing but what really sells this campground is its proximity to the many fishing and swimming holes. The only downside is that there are not too many spots available. Reservations are highly recommended because spots are limited and fill up fast.

West Clear Creek Group Campgrounds | 4600 E. FS 6262, Camp Verde

If wildlife is what you’re looking for you will find it in West Clear Creek Campgrounds. The environment provides a perfect setting for many different species to call it “home”. You can go hiking, swimming, wading, and fishing nearby. While the trees may not provide quite as much shade, you will most likely be spending your time in the nearby water.

What is Slide Rock?

Slide Rock is an exciting and entertaining element of the state park, it's also a rich historical location! Check out the hiking path or jump on in!

Some of the biggest attractions in Arizona are state parks. Many different state parks offer stunning views, fun activities, and a far better place to get a workout outside of the gym. One of the best state parks to visit is in Oak Creek. It’s called Slide Rock and it’s a popular destination during the summer. Slide Rock is not just a fun location, it also has a fascinating history. Visit Slide Rock today and find out why so many people love visiting this beautiful and exciting state park.

In The Beginning

Before the park became known as Slide Rock, it was called the Pendley Homestead. The Pendley Homestead is a 43-acre apple farm in Oak Creek. Frank L. Pendley acquired the land through the Homestead Act in 1910. While others failed, Frank succeeded in creating an irrigation system that is still used today. Roadways were paved in 1938 that went through the canyon, and Frank saw an opportunity to take advantage of the new business headed his way. Cabins were built and vacationers were supplied with a place to stay and enjoy the sights.

Swimming

Slide Rock got its name thanks to a creek bottom that is slippery. It’s located just near the homestead! Using that slippery creek floor visitors can slip down a natural slide. To add more fun to the area, there is deep water located nearby as well. The courageous visitors will jump from the rock formations and into the deeper waters below. Others will just head down to the water for a refreshing swim, minus the heart stopping jump.

No Swimming Required

If swimming isn’t something you want to do, you can enjoy the sights along a walking path. The walking path does go through a very shallow part of the creek so make sure you have appropriate footwear. While this area is not meant for swimming, it is a great place to get your feet wet and enjoy the beauty of Oak Creek. You can spend your time looking for the filming locations of numerous classic films from the late ‘40’s or early ‘50’s. Films like, “Broken Arrow”, “Drum Beat”, and “Angel and The Badman” all have scenes that were filmed at Slide Rock!

What to Pack for Your Picnic in Sedona

When people come to Sedona Arizona, they expect to enjoy nature in many different ways. You can go on a hike, take a tour in a Pink Jeep or hot air balloon, or simply take a walk along the creek beds. One of the best and most romantic things to do in Sedona is to enjoy a picnic. There are many places to have an amazing picnic like Crystal Vortex, Healing Vortex, or Slide Rock State Park in Oak Creek. No matter where you go on a picnic in Sedona you will want to make sure to pack the things you will need. That’s where we come in: We’re here to help you with some tips on what to pack for your picnic in Sedona!

What to Pack for Your Picnic in Sedona:

The Right Food

The food is the most important part of any great picnic. When packing for a picnic avoid foods that will perish quickly, some examples are mayonnaise, eggs, frozen items, and soft cheeses. Make sure everything you pack is sealed properly and will last until you’re ready to eat.

Ice Packs

If you’re taking a picnic after a hike or long journey, be sure to have ice packs. You could bring ice if you’d like, but an ice pack will help avoid a mess. The cold will also contribute to preventing the food from spoiling!

Drinks

No picnic is complete without drinks. If your goal is romance, a nice bottle of wine will do the trick. However, if kids are joining you, be sure to pack kid-friendly drinks like juice boxes. Always be sure to pack water, especially in Sedona!

Tableware

You should always have the tableware you need to enjoy your meal. Try and bring disposable utensils and plates that you can repack and recycle later, this way no one has to worry about dishes!

Cleaning Supplies

When considering what to pack for your picnic in Sedona be sure to pack extra bags that you can use to store any leftover food, trash, or recyclables. You should also bring moist towelettes to clean up your hands and face after eating, these are especially useful for cleanup with the little ones and after finger foods!

Seating

Depending on the distance you need to walk, you may be able to bring folding chairs. However, to get the real picnic feel, you’ll want a blanket to sit on and enjoy the view.

Odds and Ends

Sedona offers many great areas to do things that you may normally do inside a building. Bring a Yoga mat with you to get some poses in before your meal. You can also bring Bluetooth speakers to play soothing sounds while you eat or to help set the mood.

Best Places to Watch the Sunrise in Sedona

One of the best things about Sedona, Arizona is all of the beautiful natural landscapes. Every morning nature puts on a show in Sedona for all to see; the sunrise is one of the most beautiful parts of the day in this desert landscape! While watching the sunrise from anywhere is a stunning and breathtaking experience, there are a few spots in particular that are worth the trip to make the event magical. During your visit I would recommend heading out early one day to one of these spots, as they’re the best places to watch the sunrise in Sedona.

Best Places to Watch the Sunrise in Sedona:

Airport Mesa

Sedona is the perfect place to look at a sunrise thanks to the long distance viewing and natural rock formations. Airport Mesa has views from Airport Road, where you park and hike up a trail. Once you pick a spot you can see the sun rise over Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, and Courthouse Butte! It’s a great location to take in a multitude of naturally amazing views.

Doe Mountain

There are plenty of places where a 360-degree view makes for a perfect sunrise or sunset, Doe Mountain is the prime example. After a short hike to an elevation of 450-feet, you can claim a spot and see the sunrise. Here you’ll also find views of downtown Sedona, Capitol Butte, and Verde Valley.

Sugarloaf Trail

Right off of Little Elf you’ll find a small parking lot. From that parking lot you can take a short hike up the trail and find the perfect sunrise views. After the sun has risen head to the main trail and hike out to the cliff overlook! You’ll be rewarded with an amazing view of Devil’s Kitchen!

Red Rock Crossing & Cathedral Rock

Some of the best views in Sedona require a bit of work. Red Rock Crossing & Cathedral Rock require a bit of a hike, and you should definitely pack your usual hiking gear. Travel to Crescent Moon Ranch, and hike along the creek that passes nearby. Once at the creek, you’ll find that there are plenty of sun rise viewing spots.

Before you head out on your sunrise hike be sure to check for specific sunrise times so that you’re not late. If you plan on being out for longer than just the sunrise make sure to pack enough supplies to stay safe and prepared. Also you will want to pack your camera or smartphones so you can capture the beautiful show!

Let’s Talk About Constellations

There are so many stars in the sky and before there were things like Google Maps, pioneers used the stars to travel. Because of this, they created and named a few constellations that look like certain shapes so they could look up in the night sky, see the shape and know if they were going in the right direction.

The North Star

Although not a constellation by itself, it is the most well known star, and part of a constellation as well. It’s claim to fame was leading travelers, well, north. One of the brightest stars in the sky, it’s a signal for all those walking around at night that they’re going North. If you’re ever lost, just look up at the sky and find the North Star to lead you north and hopefully to safety.

The Big Dipper

The easiest constellation to find in the sky. It looks like a giant pot and the North Star is the tip of the handle. If you use the North Star, you can see that it is a part of a group of seven stars in the constellation Ursa Major.

The Little Dipper

If you find the Big Dipper, you can draw a line to the Little Dipper with your finger. It’s right across from the Big Dipper and is just a smaller size pot in the sky. And just a side note, the Little Dipper isn’t technically a constellation; it’s an asterism or a noticeable star pattern. But it’s always a constellation in my heart. It’s trying it’s best, so it deserves a place on this list.

Cassiopeia

Another big constellation that’s easy to find is Cassiopeia. With its distinctive “W” shape formed by five bright stars, Cassiopeia is one of the most easily recognizable constellations in the night sky. Most kids find it as their first constellation since it’s so big and easy to make.

Lyra

A smaller constellation, but still a constellation is Lyra. It’s a lopsided square with a tail to it’s brightest star. Much like the Big and Little Dipper, it’s higher up in the sky than the other two. It’s most easily viewable in August, so it’s a nice to try to find it when sitting outside on a clear night.

Wine Tasting 101

On August 20th, Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge is hosting a Night of Indulgence. You (and your friend, husband, wife, etc.) can enjoy hand picked wines that are paired with delicious chocolate and cheeses. Chef Brian Widmer made all the decisions so all you just have to is drink and be merry!

But for those who are a little wary of wine and for those who just drink wine straight out of the bottle, never having even been to a wine tasting event, we’ve gathered up some points to look for for getting the most out of your wine drinking experience.

The Temperature:

For as silly as this sounds, the temperature of your wine really does have a big effect on how your wine tastes. If your wine is too cold or too warm, then you won’t be getting the right taste. Here’s two easy ways to fix the temperature problem:

If the wine is too cold, warm it up with your hands.
Too warm? Toss some ice cubes in there.

The Color:

There are three different colored wines: red, white and rosé. The colors give you a sense of density and the saturation of the wine, which affects its taste. Red wine doesn’t taste the same as white wine and vice a versa.

You can easily spot these colors when looking at the bottle. But if the bottle is not provided for you and you can’t tell if it’s white or rosé, then you can always look down into the glass and see the depth of the color.

The Glass:

The glass your wine is served in affects the taste as much as the temperature does.

If the glass is dirty, then your wine will probably be gross.
If the glass is too small or has the wrong shape, then that can affect your taste as well.
Make sure you condition your glass beforehand as well.
- Give the glass a quick rinse with wine, swirling it around to cover all the sides.
- Then the glass is covered with a little bit of the wine, giving you a great taste testing experience.

Good Company:

You want to make sure you’re surrounded by good friends and/or family when enjoying your wine! It just makes it taste a little better when you’re all doing it together. It’s all about the atmosphere where you drink your wine!

Star Gazing 101

The night sky is breathtaking. From the moon to the stars in the sky, there’s so much going on up there that we don’t know about. Luckily, we’re able to have a small peek at the universe we live in by seeing stars that are older than we’ll ever be and further away than we’ve ever traveled.

Sedona is known for it’s Red Rocks, but one other thing it should be noted for is it’s incredible view of the night sky. Stars shine down on the Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge and on August 17th, you’re able to learn a bit more about those stars. Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge will be hosting a Night Under the Stars event, taking you on a star tour and showing you constellations after a dinner served fresh from their kitchen.

We’ve gathered up a few star gazing tips so that you can make the best of your star gazing trip at Garland’s.

The first thing to realize is that there is a proper lingo that goes with star-gazing. It is important to learn certain words so you know what your star guide is talking about. A few example words are as followed:

Field of View: The circle of sky that you see when you look through a telescope or binoculars. Generally, the lower the magnification, the wider the field of view.
Limb: The edge of a celestial object’s visible disk.
Meridian: The imaginary north-south line that passes directly overhead
Star Party: A group of people who get together to view the night sky. Astronomy clubs often hold star parties to introduce stargazing to the public.

For as much as we can see with our naked eye, there’s so much more to be seen in the night sky. Using telescopes gives us a deeper look into the night sky. You’re able to see a lot more than just a few blinking dots in the sky. Make sure you know what the certain parts of the telescopes are and how they work. Check out the graphic below!

Another thing that goes hand in hand with telescopes are sky charts. Sky charts are a map of the night sky that astronomers used to use to pick out stars which told them where they were going. Now, you can download these sky charts from apps on the Apple or Andriod app store. Instead of hold up a giant map, you can just hold your phone up to the sky and see what stars are above you!

And lastly, when you’re star gazing, it’s easy to get lost in thought. What does it all mean? Why are we here? etc. So we encourage you to have fun while star gazing! You are standing under a massive universe, spanning light years! Pick out a few constellations for yourself, find a star and name it, connect the stars to make a pretty picture! Enjoy yourself!

These one-day road trips are perfect for getting you out of the house. Taking a one day road trip is the perfect way to scratch the travel itch without having a lot of time or money to invest. Sedona road trips are an awesome way to spend time with your family, save some money, and learn a little bit about the culture of the area.

Red Rock Scenic Byway

Not every road trip needs to have a final destination. You could also take a road trip where the driving is the point of interest! Hop in the car and head out to the Red Rock Scenic Byway. You can enjoy the stunning views, there are plenty of places to stop along the way, AND you can stop and check out the awesome hiking trails to complete your day trip experience. Sycamore Canyon

If you’re looking for a day trip that leads you to the middle of the wilderness then Sycamore Canyon is for you! Sycamore canyon is lesser known than other canyons in Arizona but is actually the second largest in red rock country. There are plenty of trails to go hiking, horseback riding, and TONS of awesome photo stops. Taylor Cabin was home to one of America’s most famous residents and is still standing. You can check it out for yourself, life in Arizona is always exciting!

Meteor Crater

Meteor Crater is among the most curious locations of all the craters and canyons in Arizona. Scientists have been baffled by the crater for decades. There are no meteorite remains on site. Today the location is home to some of the coolest photo-op spots in Arizona. You can hike over the crater and then walk out onto the dock which hangs over the rim. Don’t miss out on snapping an out of this world selfie from the edge!

Petrified Forest National Park

Petrified Forest National Park is the place to go if you like WEIRD. It’s one of the top five weirdest places in the world. The park is unlike anything else you’ve ever experienced. The tree trunks have become a type of fossil that shows what the forest once looked like. Some of the trunks reach over 190 feet in height. You can also check out the locations where dinosaur fossils were found! This is definitely an awesome spot to take those adventurous young kids as well. One of the most curious Sedona road trips for sure!

Montezuma Well

Montezuma Well is a great example of the rich history that can be found all over Arizona. The native Sinagua culture is very prevalent in the area; the remains in Arizona are amazing and definitely should not be missed, especially if you are a history buff! There are cliff dwellings, pueblo ruins, and a plethora of trails you can hike. The area is considered sacred by many of the local tribes but it is open to the public as well. The forest is cooler than the Arizona sun and makes a day of hiking during the summer much more pleasant! The actual well contains water that reaches 74 degrees; it’s considered to the lifeblood of the culture that once thrived in the area.

Garland’s Night Under the Stars

Garland’s understands that not everyone will want to book a complete Relaxation Package. For those who want a more custom experience, you can visit the Spa Cabin. Here, you can choose a 60 or 90 minute massage. You’ll also have the option to add a hot stone therapy to your session. The Spa Cabin takes separate reservations and it is recommended to book at least a week in advance.

What is Garland’s Lodge?

Garland’s Lodge provides a unique experience in an unforgettable setting of Sedona’s red rocks and the ever-changing seasons of Oak Creek Canyon.

Getting close to nature doesn’t always require a tent and a sleeping bag. Sometimes, all you need is a reservation and a camera at the ready. At Garland’s Lodge, your reservation goes a long way and gets you up close and personal with nature. Cabins

Garland’s has 17 cabins available for your trip ranging from $275 to $375 a night. Take a romantic weekend getaway and stay in a log cabin for two or choose a cabin that can fit the whole family. You will even find ADA accessible cabins at Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge. The one thing all of the cabins share is the beautiful view right outside your windows and the amazing theming inside each room.

While sitting by the campfire and cooking your own meal is a great experience, it’s not ranked by USA Today. Fortunately for you, Garland’s dining has been rated in the top ten restaurants in the US by USA Today. Chefs at Garland’s do get you close to nature with every dish as well. Garland’s Experiences: Self-Propelled Bicycle Tour Through Sedona

The Garland's Experience along with Self Propelled Tours offers two different tours for you to choose from, and no matter which you choose (or if you do both), you will feel like you’ve truly experienced the beauty of the Arizona desert.

When visiting the beautiful landscapes around Sedona, Arizona, you have to wonder if there is a way to get closer to the beautiful scenery. While you can enjoy Sedona’s Pink Jeep Tours (another amazing Garland’s Experience package!) and many other views from the ground, the Self Propelled Bicycle Tour through Sedona is another way to become part of the scenery. A Self Propelled Tour is exactly what it sounds like, self-propelled. Hop on a bicycle and get out into nature, become part of the scenery, and get up close and personal with the famous red rock formations. The Garland’s Experience along with Self Propelled Tours offers two different tours for you to choose from, and no matter which you choose (or if you do both), you will feel like you’ve truly experienced the beauty of the Arizona desert.

Bell Rock Bicycle Tour | $115/Person

The Bell Rock tour is the easiest of the two and is perfect for the family of cyclers. Throughout the 2 hour, 14-mile tour you will stop at many photo spots; Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, and Castle Rock to name a few. There is even a secret Bell Rock photo stop along the way. Included in the price of the tour are your bicycle, a helmet, water, a power bar, and a knowledgeable tour guide. You will need to bring your own sunscreen, cycling clothing, comfortable shoes and gloves, as well as a great sense of adventure. The tour needs to be reserved in advance with your height, how many people in your party, bicycle preference (if you have one) and what time you would like to start the tour. You will meet your guide at the start point, Absolute Bikes on Route 179. Don’t forget to bring a camera because you will want to take plenty of photos.

Village Cross Bicycle Tour | $160/Adult

Every cyclist knows that not every route is good for every rider, as some routes are a bit more challenging. The Village Cross Bicycle Tour is one of those challenging routes. This tour lasts 4 hours long (twice the distance of the Bell Rock Tour) and requires a bit more experience from the riders. This tour is not available for children and has a 24-hour cancellation policy. Starting at Absolute Bikes on Route 179, the Village Cross tour lasts 28 miles through the Village of Oak Creek. Around every turn, there will be new challenges, great scenery, and photo opportunities you will not want to miss. Like the Bell Rock Tour, a sense of adventure is required but so is a need for a challenge. Your tour guide will be just as knowledgeable and prepared for the terrain as any other tour and will accommodate your need for speed or lack thereof. The goal is to challenge you, show you great scenes straight from nature, and keep you as comfortable as possible. A bicycle, helmet, water and power bar are included in the price, but you will need to bring your own sunscreen, clothing, camera, and determination.

Garland’s Experiences: Red Rock Balloon Tours

Experiencing the natural red rock of Arizona is an amazing experience available at Garland’s. Getting up close and personal and becoming part of the natural scene is an amazing feeling, but there is more than one way to see it all. The Red Rock Balloon Tour is one of the best ways to see everything from a view that was once reserved for the birds.

Garland’s calls it an “aerial nature walk” and that’s exactly what you will think it is as you soar over the landscapes in a hot air balloon. See the wonders of Red Rock Country from high above it all. Take in the stunning views and get photo opportunities you just can’t get with your feet planted on the ground. The Red Rock Balloon Tour is led by knowledgeable pilots that know the area well enough to show you things in a way you’ve never seen them before. Learn about the red rock or just enjoy the scenery in romantic silence with that special someone. The tour lasts for 3-4 hours with 1-1.5 hours of actual air time.
