Earth Day in Sedona | Ways To Be More Earth Conscious

Earth Day in Sedona | Ways To Be More Earth Conscious

Earth Day in Sedona will arrive before you know it. Do you have a plan for how to be more earth conscious this year? Now more than ever we need to find ways to Volunteer in Sedona and make eco-friendly behaviors our normal behaviors!

Today we’re sharing five easy things you can do to reduce your negative impact on the earth and change your routine to be more earth conscious!

Earth Day in Sedona | Ways To Be More Earth Conscious

The truth is that we can all make changes. Even those of us who work hard to be eco-friendly and make positive choices for the environment have room to grow. Since it might be hard for some of us to get out there and safely volunteer in Sedona this year we’re sharing some things you can do at home to make a difference!

Stop Using Plastic Bags

One of the biggest wastes in our world is single use plastic products. It might not seem like a big deal but if you keep track of all the single use plastic waste you generate in a week or a month it might surprise you…because it’s everywhere. One really important step we can take is to stop using plastic bags. Switch to canvas totes for groceries, upcycle any bags you do have to use into sleeping mats that can be donated to shelters and homeless support organizations.

Borrow Instead of Buying New Items

There are a lot of apps out there dedicated to this very thing now but in general there’s a lot of things we buy that we will only use a time or two. Borrow these items or trade for them. Even buying used items is better than buying brand new products.

If we can cut back on the sheer amount of stuff we’re buying we can help the Earth be less polluted, create less waste, and overall be more earth friendly people!

Eat Less Meat

You don’t have to stop eating meat altogether in order to be eco-friendly but it definitely helps to cut back on the amount of meat you are eating. Did you know that farming meat consumes not just land and water resources but also takes an incredible amount of fossil fuels?! Everything from land management and crop production to feed animals creates waste and harmful carbon emissions. Maybe this year would be a great time to start eating a more plant based diet to help the earth!

Switch Your Bills To Paperless

You are probably reading this article right now on a device of some kind…so why not get your mail the same way! Choose paperless billing and mailings for all of your possible deliveries. Each month you will cut down on paper usage, fuels needed to ship those parcels, and more! It’s a small change that makes a big difference. Think of all the junk mail you throw away that ends up in a landfill. Consider reaching out to unsubscribe from mailings. It’s time consuming but it’s a great way to volunteer in Sedona safely this year for Earth Day!

Hang Out The Laundry

Using the dryer consumes a ton of electricity or gas. Those resources are not without their impact on the earth. This Earth Day in Sedona make an effort to start hanging up clothing in the house on hangers our outdoors on the line to avoid using the dryer! It’s a great feeling and an easy way to make a difference.

Take A Ride On The Snowbowl Gondola!

The Snowbowl Gondola can be found at 9300 North Snow Bowl Road, Flagstaff, AZ 86001. Hours are Friday & Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit the website here.

The Snowbowl Gondola is a ski lift…so plan on dressing extra warm and also plan on heading up up up! You’ll be heading up about 11,000 feet and the view will be well worth the chilly temperatures. There’s something truly magical about the mountain during the winter months.

You can’t beat the view and it’s a great way to get outdoors without having to do any actual skiing, snowboarding, etc. Of course you can do that too if you want but even just a ride up the mountain on the ski lift and a cozy spot by the fire afterwards is a wonderful way to spend a winter day here in Sedona and the surrounding areas.

If you can plan your visit accordingly you should try and take the ride around sunset. The only thing that could possibly enhance the natural beauty of this area during the winter is the colorful sunset that paints the sky and all the white snowy trees in shades of orange, red, and yellow. Grab your camera and prepare for some excellent photos. Since the lift moves pretty slowly you’ll have plenty of time to take in the sights and cozy up next to a loved one!

What are Vortexes in Sedona?

Vortexes In Sedona

There are many different schools of thought when it comes to natural healing. Some of the healing arrives in a literal way, think of using Aloe Vera for a sunburn. For a more “meta” healing people come and visit the Vortexes in Sedona, Arizona. The Vortexes in Sedona create a powerful energy that most people say they can feel. The energy given off at the vortexes is also utilized for spiritual growth by people who consider themselves to be “on the path” to their highest spiritual selves. The question is, why do these vortexes hold so much power?

To understand the places known as vortexes in Sedona, you need to know what it means for a place to be considered a vortex. The definition of a vortex is as follows: a funnel shape that is created by any whirling fluid or energy. The most common examples of vortexes in nature can be found in whirlwinds, tornadoes, or even water going down a drain.

Vortexes In Sedona

Energy Vortexes of Sedona

When it comes to the vortexes in Sedona, people are referring to energy vortexes. These vortexes give off minuscule amounts of energy. The amount of energy is so small that it can barely be measured. However, it’s that small amount of energy that makes these places popular among those who value vortexes for their spiritual effects. Each vortex can be found at intersections of lines known as “ley lines” where electromagnetic earth energy lines meet. While all of the vortexes have ley lines that meet, they meet in different ways and give off different spiritual energies.

Different Types of Ley Lines

There are believed to be three different types of ley lines that make up the various vortexes. The first vortex is a magnetic vortex. At a magnetic vortex, people claim to feel a nurturing energy that can help with inward struggles. The other type of vortex is known as an electrical vortex. At an electrical vortex, the energy is said to be more masculine and energizing. Finally there is what is known as a balanced vortex. These are essentially a mixture of the previous two types of vortexes.

Where to See Leaves Changing Color in Sedona

Where to see the Leaves Changing Color in Sedona

All year long you can enjoy the beautiful nature in Sedona–the sights, the sounds, and the smells are all unique and amazing. During the fall you’ll be in for a real treat!

There’s one natural beauty that rolls around once each year and doesn’t stay too long…The fall! During the fall we get to see the leaves changing color, and the view in Sedona is completely transformed. I know that the leaves may change color everywhere, but there’s something Sedona has that not many places can copy…in certain places in Sedona, the change in colors means unique photo opportunities against that beautiful red rock!

Where to See Leaves Changing Color in Sedona:

West Fork Oak Creek Trail

Taking a hike in the Oak Creek area is not unpopular. During the fall, the hikes become even more beautiful with the changing of the leaves. The West Fork Oak Creek Trail is where you can see some of the most stunning color changes in the area. Back in 2/14, a fire took many of the trees away from us. However there are still some strong scenes during the fall!

Huckaby Trail

For a fairly flat hike, Huckaby Trail is a popular choice. At the top of the hike you will find a ridge that offers views of not only Oak Creek but of Uptown Sedona. As the trail curves to follow the creek, there’s shrubbery and trees that change color during the fall. Huckaby Trail is perfect for “leafers” as well as people who want to see the famous red rock of the area.

Casner Canyon Trail

Some trails are just meant to be hiked during the fall, and Casner Trail is one of them. At the very beginning of the trail you will be walking through Oak Creek, so bring shoes you don’t mind getting wet. Once past the creek, you will find some of the best views of the leaves changing colors.

Allens Bend Trail

Allens Bend Trail is covered in trees that are left over from an old orchard that once covered the area. Now, the trees from the orchard as well as some riparian trees provide ample shade as well as a front row seat to fall colors. This trail is mostly level and very easy to hike. Bring the family for some great photos.

Girdner Trail

For a more moderate path that requires transportation at the end, check out Girdner Trail. This trail descends into the west and enters Dry Creek. If you do decide to hike round-trip, it’s a scenic 4-hour trip with elevations of 4,500ft down to 4,200 ft. While the views in the fall are beautiful, the creek beds fill during heavy rains so be sure to check the weather as well as the water levels at the creeks.

What is Slide Rock?

Slide Rock is an exciting and entertaining element of the state park, it's also a rich historical location! Check out the hiking path or jump on in!

Some of the biggest attractions in Arizona are state parks. Many different state parks offer stunning views, fun activities, and a far better place to get a workout outside of the gym. One of the best state parks to visit is in Oak Creek. It’s called Slide Rock and it’s a popular destination during the summer. Slide Rock is not just a fun location, it also has a  fascinating history. Visit Slide Rock today and find out why so many people love visiting this beautiful and exciting state park.

In The Beginning

Before the park became known as Slide Rock, it was called the Pendley Homestead. The Pendley Homestead is a 43-acre apple farm in Oak Creek. Frank L. Pendley acquired the land through the Homestead Act in 1910. While others failed, Frank succeeded in creating an irrigation system that is still used today. Roadways were paved in 1938 that went through the canyon, and Frank saw an opportunity to take advantage of the new business headed his way. Cabins were built and vacationers were supplied with a place to stay and enjoy the sights.

Swimming

Slide Rock got its name thanks to a creek bottom that is slippery. It’s located just near the homestead! Using that slippery creek floor visitors can slip down a natural slide. To add more fun to the area, there is deep water located nearby as well. The courageous visitors will jump from the rock formations and into the deeper waters below. Others will just head down to the water for a refreshing swim, minus the heart stopping jump.

No Swimming Required

If swimming isn’t something you want to do, you can enjoy the sights along a walking path. The walking path does go through a very shallow part of the creek so make sure you have appropriate footwear. While this area is not meant for swimming, it is a great place to get your feet wet and enjoy the beauty of Oak Creek. You can spend your time looking for the filming locations of numerous classic films from the late ‘40’s or early ‘50’s. Films like, “Broken Arrow”, “Drum Beat”, and “Angel and The Badman” all have scenes that were filmed at Slide Rock!

The Story of The Red Rock in Sedona

Perhaps the most notable of the natural landscapes in Sedona is the red rock formations. This is a little background on how the red rock was formed!

One of the most amazing natural features of the Sedona area is the red rock. There are restaurants, clubs, music venues, and even stores that all revolve around the theme of the red rock in Sedona. It’s a major draw for tourists and locals alike. It’s amazing to see in person, photos just can’t do the natural wonders justice. Today we’re sharing with you the story of how the red rock in Sedona came about!

The Story of the Red Rock in Sedona:

Perhaps the most notable of the natural landscapes in Sedona is the red rock formations. This is a little background on how the red rock was formed!

Anyone who comes to Sedona to see the red rock knows that the geology of the area is what makes it so beautiful. The red rock formations help to make the sunrise more beautiful, enhances the sunsets glow and simply makes everything in between more stunning. While many people enjoy the red rock formations, not many people know how it got here. The story of the red rock is almost as beautiful as the formations themselves.

Before the red rock was turned into rock, it was all soft mud and sand. Over a 320 million year period changes in nature helped transform the sand and mud into something more beautiful than we could have imagined. Sea levels rose and fell during this time and with each rise and fall mud was added. During the sea level rise the mud would be washed in and then when it receded the wind brought in layers of sand. After years of this happening over and over again, the sediment was lithified (transformed) into hard rock.

The hard rock had a thin layer of iron oxide that was caused by chemical weathering of natural minerals. The process of the iron oxide weathering turned the rock its signature red color. At one point there was 1,900 feet of red rock covering Sedona. While we know how the red rock got there, how it was formed into beautiful natural sculptures is another story.

Oak Creek began to form and over time the other rivers in the area began to erode and break up the rock. The rivers would carry parts of the rock out to the ocean and leave behind red rock formations that we love today. When we look at the red rock formations we are actually looking at natural erosion taking place right before our eyes. Oak Creek, for example washes sand over the rock, smoothing it out like with a natural polishing type process. The sand also cuts a smooth groove through the rock that visitors float in during the hotter months of the year!

Hearing about how the red rock was formed and how it continues to change is amazing, but nothing will compare to seeing it in person. Visit Sedona today and see how nature creates beautiful works of art on the largest canvas of all!

One of the greatest ways to enjoy the great outdoors is by hiking. Hiking with pets in Sedona is a great way to get everyone out and about, enjoying nature!

Best Places for Hiking with Pets in Sedona:

Huckaby Trail

The best trails for hiking with dogs are made out of either red dirt or sand. Huckaby Trail is one trail in the area that is mostly red dirt or sand. There are a few rocky parts on the path, but nothing too strenuous for a dog. The creek is fairly far in so be sure to bring some extra water for your dog, take plenty of stops if your pet is not used to the extra exercise. Make sure you keep the heat in mind when hiking with your pets during the summer.

Margs Draw Trail

Hiking alongside horses is always fun, especially if your dog is horse-friendly. Margs Draw Trail goes straight through Munds Mountain Wilderness which is a popular place for horseback riding. There are plenty of spots that offer shade, but the trail is mostly exposed so be prepared with plenty of water. You might want to avoid this trail if your pup is not friendly with larger animals.

Vultee Arch Trail

Vultee Arch Trail can be found next to two other trails, Bear Sign and Dry Creek. The trail is a narrow one that is mostly sand and perfectly safe for your dog’s paws. Since this trail is narrow and very populated, be sure your dog is friendly to strangers. You will inevitably run into other people and maybe even another dog or two while hiking on this particular trail!

Wilson Canyon Trail

There are some trails that you want to get to early in the day, Wilson Canyon Trail is one of them. The biggest reason you will want to arrive early is not because the trail gets crowded, but because the parking lot does. Numerous trails start here so parking gets a bit hectic. However, once you make it to the trail, you’ll be fine! This is still a great option for hiking with your dog in Sedona. There are beautiful natural views that you can enjoy with your best furry friend!

No matter what trail you decide to take with your dog, be aware of your surroundings. Sedona is full of nature at it’s best and wild animals are a big part of that! Don’t forget about that famous Sedona heat. It’s important to always keep your dog and yourself hydrated! Keep your dogs on a leash at all times and be cautious of wild animals, plants, and weather conditions.

What to Pack for Your Picnic in Sedona:

The Right Food

The food is the most important part of any great picnic. When packing for a picnic avoid foods that will perish quickly, some examples are mayonnaise, eggs, frozen items, and soft cheeses. Make sure everything you pack is sealed properly and will last until you’re ready to eat.

Ice Packs

If you’re taking a picnic after a hike or long journey, be sure to have ice packs. You could bring ice if you’d like, but an ice pack will help avoid a mess. The cold will also contribute to preventing the food from spoiling!

Drinks

No picnic is complete without drinks. If your goal is romance, a nice bottle of wine will do the trick. However, if kids are joining you, be sure to pack kid-friendly drinks like juice boxes. Always be sure to pack water, especially in Sedona!

Tableware

You should always have the tableware you need to enjoy your meal. Try and bring disposable utensils and plates that you can repack and recycle later, this way no one has to worry about dishes!

Cleaning Supplies

When considering what to pack for your picnic in Sedona be sure to pack extra bags that you can use to store any leftover food, trash, or recyclables. You should also bring moist towelettes to clean up your hands and face after eating, these are especially useful for cleanup with the little ones and after finger foods!

Seating

Depending on the distance you need to walk, you may be able to bring folding chairs. However, to get the real picnic feel, you’ll want a blanket to sit on and enjoy the view.

Odds and Ends

Sedona offers many great areas to do things that you may normally do inside a building. Bring a Yoga mat with you to get some poses in before your meal. You can also bring Bluetooth speakers to play soothing sounds while you eat or to help set the mood.

Let’s Talk About Constellations

constellations

There are so many stars in the sky and before there were things like Google Maps, pioneers used the stars to travel.  Because of this, they created and named a few constellations that look like certain shapes so they could look up in the night sky, see the shape and know if they were going in the right direction.

The North Star

Although not a constellation by itself, it is the most well known star, and part of a constellation as well. It’s claim to fame was leading travelers, well, north. One of the brightest stars in the sky, it’s a signal for all those walking around at night that they’re going North. If you’re ever lost, just look up at the sky and find the North Star to lead you north and hopefully to safety.

The easiest constellation to find in the sky. It looks like a giant pot and the North Star is the tip of the handle. If you use the North Star, you can see that it is a part of a group of seven stars in the constellation Ursa Major.

The Little Dipper

If you find the Big Dipper, you can draw a line to the Little Dipper with your finger. It’s right across from the Big Dipper and is just a smaller size pot in the sky. And just a side note, the Little Dipper isn’t technically a constellation; it’s an asterism or a noticeable star pattern. But it’s always a constellation in my heart. It’s trying it’s best, so it deserves a place on this list.

Cassiopeia    Cassiopeia

Another big constellation that’s easy to find is Cassiopeia. With its distinctive “W” shape formed by five bright stars, Cassiopeia is one of the most easily recognizable constellations in the night sky. Most kids find it as their first constellation since it’s so big and easy to make.

Lyra

A smaller constellation, but still a constellation is Lyra. It’s a lopsided square with a tail to it’s brightest star. Much like the Big and Little Dipper, it’s higher up in the sky than the other two. It’s most easily viewable in August, so it’s a nice to try to find it when sitting outside on a clear night.

ImgConstellation

If you want to see any of these constellations, then you should attend the Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge Night Under the Stars event! Our star guide, Dennis Young from Sedona Starlight, is ready to show you all the night sky has to offer!

Wine Tasting 101

winetasting

On August 20th, Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge is hosting a Night of Indulgence. You (and your friend, husband, wife, etc.) can enjoy hand picked wines that are paired with delicious chocolate and cheeses. Chef Brian Widmer made all the decisions so all you just have to is drink and be merry!

But for those who are a little wary of wine and for those who just drink wine straight out of the bottle, never having even been to a wine tasting event, we’ve gathered up some points to look for for getting the most out of your wine drinking experience.

The Temperature:

For as silly as this sounds, the temperature of your wine really does have a big effect on how your wine tastes. If your wine is too cold or too warm, then you won’t be getting the right taste. Here’s two easy ways to fix the temperature problem:

  • If the wine is too cold, warm it up with your hands.
  • Too warm? Toss some ice cubes in there.

The Color:

There are three different colored wines: red, white and rosé. The colors give you a sense of density and the saturation of the wine, which affects its taste. Red wine doesn’t taste the same as white wine and vice a versa.

You can easily spot these colors when looking at the bottle. But if the bottle is not provided for you and you can’t tell if it’s white or rosé, then you can always look down into the glass and see the depth of the color.

The Glass:

The glass your wine is served in affects the taste as much as the temperature does.

  • If the glass is dirty, then your wine will probably be gross.
  • If the glass is too small or has the wrong shape, then that can affect your taste as well.
  • Make sure you condition your glass beforehand as well.
    • Give the glass a quick rinse with wine, swirling it around to cover all the sides.
    • Then the glass is covered with a little bit of the wine, giving you a great taste testing experience.

Good Company:

  • You want to make sure you’re surrounded by good friends and/or family when enjoying your wine! It just makes it taste a little better when you’re all doing it together. It’s all about the atmosphere where you drink your wine!
  • If you want to flaunt your wine knowledge, make sure you buy your tickets for the Garland’s a Night of Indulgence event!

WHERE:

  • Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge

WHEN:

  • August 20th from 3-5pm

TICKETS:

  • Wine Tasting + Dinner for a Couple: $150
  • Single Wine Tasting + Dinner: $85
  • Wine Tasting for a Couple: $45

Star Gazing 101

stargazing101

The night sky is breathtaking. From the moon to the stars in the sky, there’s so much going on up there that we don’t know about. Luckily, we’re able to have a small peek at the universe we live in by seeing stars that are older than we’ll ever be and further away than we’ve ever traveled.

Sedona is known for it’s Red Rocks, but one other thing it should be noted for is it’s incredible view of the night sky. Stars shine down on the Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge and on August 17th, you’re able to learn a bit more about those stars. Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge will be hosting a Night Under the Stars event, taking you on a star tour and showing you constellations after a dinner served fresh from their kitchen.

We’ve gathered up a few star gazing tips so that you can make the best of your star gazing trip at Garland’s.

The first thing to realize is that there is a proper lingo that goes with star-gazing. It is important to learn certain words so you know what your star guide is talking about. A few example words are as followed:

  • Field of View: The circle of sky that you see when you look through a telescope or binoculars. Generally, the lower the magnification, the wider the field of view.
  • Limb: The edge of a celestial object’s visible disk.
  • Meridian: The imaginary north-south line that passes directly overhead
  • Star Party: A group of people who get together to view the night sky. Astronomy clubs often hold star parties to introduce stargazing to the public.

For as much as we can see with our naked eye, there’s so much more to be seen in the night sky. Using telescopes gives us a deeper look into the night sky. You’re able to see a lot more than just a few blinking dots in the sky. Make sure you know what the certain parts of the telescopes are and how they work. Check out the graphic below!

383687.image0

Another thing that goes hand in hand with telescopes are sky charts. Sky charts are a map of the night sky that astronomers used to use to pick out stars which told them where they were going. Now, you can download these sky charts from apps on the Apple or Andriod app store. Instead of hold up a giant map, you can just hold your phone up to the sky and see what stars are above you!

And lastly, when you’re star gazing, it’s easy to get lost in thought. What does it all mean? Why are we here? etc. So we encourage you to have fun while star gazing! You are standing under a massive universe, spanning light years! Pick out a few constellations for yourself, find a star and name it, connect the stars to make a pretty picture! Enjoy yourself!

Make sure you apply all of these tips to your trip to Garland’s on August 17th for the Night Under the Stars event! Our star guide, Dennis Young from Sedona Starlight, is ready to show you all the night sky has to offer!

The Dining Experience

The food is always fresh and locally grown, which takes each meal to a higher level of luxury. The dining room does have limited seating, however, that creates a friendly environment. In that environment, people come together to enjoy their vacation and meet new people during their stay. After all, there is nothing like creating new friends over a gourmet, chef cooked meal. Though, if you’re looking for a more private dining experience, you can request a table for two. Requests for private tables are accommodated on a reservation basis and may not always be available.

Dining at Garland's Lodge is an amazing experience filled with delicious seasonal and local food.

Cocktail Hour

For adults 21 and over who would like to enjoy a nice, refreshing drink before we dinner, we have cocktail hour. Drinks are served outdoors by a fire or out on the lawn area. Of course, the weather helps create a perfect setting to enjoy the company of family, loved ones and new friends made at the lodge. Cocktail hour is just before dinner at 6 pm, and goes until a little before the dinner bell rings at 7pm. I highly recommend the Garland’s Margarita.

Some of us like the thrill of an adventurous vacation and others prefer a more calming and soothing experience. Garland’s offers the best of both worlds, but the Relaxation Package is one of the best. In this package, you and a special someone can head down to an outdoor pavilion, where you will be greeted by two of Garland’s talented masseuses. Here, you can listen to the real life sounds of the nearby creek. No sound systems are required here to mimic the sounds of nature. After your massage, you’ll enjoy fresh strawberries and cold champagne. The setting? Beautiful Oak Creek Canyon, of course.

The A La Carte Experience

Garland’s understands that not everyone will want to book a complete Relaxation Package. For those who want a more custom experience, you can visit the Spa Cabin. Best Restaurants in Sedona

Sedona is home to several amazing restaurants. From casual to fine dining, we have you covered with our favorites.

When it comes to looking for the best restaurant anywhere in the world, there are a few key factors. The first is the food; it should be top notch, taste fresh, and leave you wanting more in a good way. The second is the ambiance; going to any restaurant, the ambiance is what helps bring the food to the next level. Last, the service; if a restaurant has terrible service, there is nothing that can save it, but if the service is as good as the food, the restaurant can become a regular dining spot for many people. In Sedona, there are many restaurants that meet at least one of the above criteria, and luckily there are also many that meet all three.

Garland’s: Sharing the Family Table

Dining_Room_quoteGarland’s Oak Creek Lodge is an Oak Creek Canyon resort unlike any other. It was built back in the 1900s during the homesteader days. While it has changed names and been passed on through different families, the traditions and beauty of the original lodge still stand today.

The original log cabin was built in 1908 still stands today and expanded into the kitchen and dining room.  When the Todd Family bought the property in 1928 they began to share their family table with guests and established a new tradition. At that time, the families that came to fish Oak Creek would stop at the Todd cabin and would share dinner with the Garland’s family.

The food was delicious and fresh: Fried chicken, apple pie with homegrown fruit, and peaches with cream were often served. After a time, one guest that frequented often, suggested building a cabin for his family. Thus, Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge began with a season lasting from Easter weekend until Thanksgiving.

Today when visitors come to Garland’s they still share the family table with other guests. Dinner is served every evening at 7:00 pm and includes four delicious courses of locally sourced, seasonal fare. Most of the produce comes straight from the organic orchards, gardens and greenhouse. All of the eggs come directly from the chicken coop on the grounds and the cider used in many cocktails (or served straight up) is pressed each fall from the apples they grow.  Trout is caught in Oak Creek and turned into amazing dishes like trout with corn fritters for breakfast and trout pâté at tea time.

Garlands_door_quoteGuests are served a hearty breakfast each morning, with a changing daily menu. Guests love Georgie’s Homemade Waffles, breakfast enchiladas and omelets with rotating seasonal produce inside. Tea time is served daily at 4:00 pm in the main lodge. Guests sip warm or cold tea and socialize around tables in comfortable chairs. Snacks served up include almond streusel coffeecake, brandied wild mushroom pâté, garlic artichoke spread and to die for banana nut bread.

Dinner is served at 7:00pm. Seating is assigned and guests sit with one another to encourage conversation. Each meal begins with a big bowl of soup. Sometimes the soup is a colorful bowl of vegetable minestrone and other times it is zesty albondigas de pollo in a spicy tomato broth. After soup, comes the salad course with fresh greens and produce from the gardens. The main course varies from roasted pork tenderloin with roasted figs and sweet onions, to roasted duckling with blackberry zinfandel sauce. Desert includes warm chocolate soufflés, light and airy lemon shortcakes with fresh summer fruit or blackberry peach cobbler. Every dish is made with extreme attention to detail and with true care. By the end, you will have to waddle back to your cabin, to laze by the fire, or look up at the stars until you fall into a peaceful slumber.

Eating at Garland’s feels like eating in the home of a loved one or long lost friend. The dining room itself is cozy and intimate while the food is familiar and hearty, yet special and elegant. Often referred to as “rustic elegance,” Garland’s delivers high quality, 5 star level meals with the down home charm of yesteryear.

Dining at Garland’s has received rave reviews from food writers over the years. The Culture Trip covers the best art, food, culture and travel across the globe. Recently, they listed Sedona’s 10 Best Restaurants and Local Eateries and Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge made the list.

“Found amongst the lovely Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge, a sixteen-cabin lodge in the heart of Oak Creek Canyon, the dining service of Garland’s makes an already great location wonderful. A small and select restaurant, they offer a standard breakfast menu, but it is their special dinner service that is worth the visit alone. A new prix fixe set menu is presented every day by their chef Brian Widmer, with an emphasis on sharing tables and making new friends over great food in a casual but elegant setting” –The Culture Trip

Travel+Leisure has named Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge as one of Sedona’s best kept secrets, writing:“What Garland’s has is peace (no televisions, no phones), an idyllic setting in Oak Creek Canyon, and glorious food: reasons enough for the fiercely loyal clientele to rebook their cabins for the same dates year after year after year. It’s certainly easy to understand how missing one of chef Amanda Stine’s dinners could put a damper on the rest of your year. There’s just a single seating each night in the rustic lodge’s dining room, and only one dish for each of the four courses. But with entrées such as roast tenderloin of pork with lobster mushrooms and apple-cabbage compote, Stine proves that she’s a master of vividly flavored New American cuisine. Ingredients often come from the lodge’s own organic orchards and gardens; the cherry tomatoes in my salad were nothing short of a revelation.” –Libby Morse

The Arizona Republic has listed Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge as a favorite Arizona getaway, writing:“Few places join Arizona rustic with Sedona chic like Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge. The inn sits atop gurgling Oak Creek with walls of red rock rising above. A retreat can mean a morning hike and an afternoon massage, or fishing at dawn and yoga after lunch. Stroll the organic apple orchards, and if it’s fall, you can watch the workers making cider. Cabins start at about $235 a night and include full breakfast and four-course dinner. And the food! Longtime chef Amanda Stine has created a mecca for seasonal Arizona flavors. On her menu: Oak Creek trout with corn oysters, tomatillo bisque with lime crema, beef tenderloin with ancho chile cream and bittersweet chocolate souffle. Plan ahead. This lodge books fast and you might be making reservations for next year.” –The Arizona Republic

If those reviews aren’t convincing enough, AZFoodie has also written about her stay at Garland’s, as well as Foodies West, Sunset.com, 10Best.com and Flagstaff Business News.

Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge is treasured by many. The guests that have been coming each season for decades hold Garland’s close to their hearts. The Garland’s experience is truly unique and unlike any other resort or lodge you may find in Sedona. If you are looking to take a Sedona vacation, stop by Garland’s.
